Indoor Air Specialist – Project Epi 1

The WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH has an opening for an Indoor Air Specialist

The Indoor Air Quality Specialist will be the agency subject matter expert on indoor air quality (IAQ) in the Climate Change and Health section. This position has expertise on indoor air quality best practices, industry standards, environmental hygiene, exposure science, and air sampling methods. The position will focus on indoor air quality issues with a specific focus on wildfire smoke guidance and a secondary focus on fossil fuel pollution and indoor sources of air pollution.

Reporting to the Senior Epidemiologist in the Climate Change and Health section, this position will help support deliverables in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Environmental Health Capacity Grant. It will design and implement pilot interventions to reduce harmful environmental exposures. In collaboration with local health jurisdictions and other partners, the position will evaluate interventions to develop best practices. These practices will then be promoted through programs, presentations, and publications.

Organizationally the position sits within the Environmental Public Health Division in the Office of Environmental Health Sciences in the Climate Change and Health Section.

The Indoor Air Quality Specialist supports the agency mission of working with others to improve the health of all people in Washington State by identifying populations vulnerable to IAQ impacts and designing corrective actions to improve environmental health outcomes.


This recruitment is for a full-time project Epidemiologist 1, currently funded through August 31, 2021.

Purpose Statement:

The job of industrial hygienist is done for the purpose of investigating safety, health, and environmental incidents, concerns, and accidents, developing and implementing safety and health trainings and programs, and providing loss control services to participating school districts.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Develops training and informational materials (e.g. back safety, ergonomics, etc.) for the purpose of preventing an injury or illness and promoting employee interest in safety and health.
  • Develops training and informational materials (e.g. indoor air quality, asbestos awareness, occupational noise, ergonomics, etc.) for the purpose of promoting employee awareness of potential health hazards and mitigation strategies.
  • Identifies hazards and safety risks for the purpose of developing appropriate action plans to avoid and reduce injuries or illness at site locations.
  • Investigates accidents and potentially adverse safety, health, and environmental conditions for the purpose of identifying issues and developing plans for remediation.
  • Coordinates repair, removal, and replacement activities for identified hazards for the purpose of implementing remedial programs in compliance with mandated requirements.
  • Responds to safety or environmental concerns (e.g. compliance asbestos (AHERA) inspections and abatement project coordination, indoor air quality, ambient and occupational noise testing, ergonomic evaluations, hazardous materials removal, etc.) for the purpose of investigating and recommending remedial actions.
  • Responds to specific requests for information (e.g. accident prevention, employee safety, DOSH and OSHA compliance, workers' compensation, etc.) for the purpose of meeting cooperative, state, and federal requirements.
  • Maintains a variety of manual and electronic files and records (e.g. investigation reports, inspection reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing documentation for compliance with state and federal requirements.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, conferences, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and gathering information.
  • Performs a variety of loss control activities (e.g. first aid and safety training, workstation/worksite evaluations, and safety audits, etc.) for the purpose of addressing the immediate safety needs of the member districts and resolving and/or recommending solutions.
  • Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. reports, statistical analyses, recommendations, procedures, etc.) for the purpose of providing written reference, conveying information, and supporting presentations concerning policy and procedure changes.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.

Job Responsibilities: 

The Worker Safety & Health Group is seeking an experienced professional to lead the Occupational Medicine and Worker’s Compensation Programs.  The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of ES&H professionals dedicated to the safe conduct of research in accordance with the highest standards of safety, health, and environmental stewardship. Responsibilities include:

  • Occupational Medicine Program: Leads multi-disciplinary response to emerging needs and events related to employee health to mitigate risks (e.g. business travel to remote regions, unplanned exposures to hazards and infectious diseases, high risk research projects, etc.).Collaborate with the OH contractor to make certain performance and contractual obligations meet expectations, regulatory compliance, and PNNL program needs. Acts as liaison between OH contractor and Lab.  
  • Provides expertise in assigned areas as a representative of Battelle/PNNL to enable Laboratory operations while assuring that all WS&H programs specifically those with an occupational health (OH) and medicine component are compliant with the letter and intent of applicable Federal, State, and DOE requirements.
  • Establishes direction for the occupational health program that meets the objectives of PNNL and required regulations.
  • Consultant and assist managers and staff on the effective use of the OH provider and identify and develop program enhancements for efficiencies (enable research and our clients).
  • Worker’s Compensation Program: Provides leadership and expertise in the management of the worker’s compensation insurance program.
